In Australia, a shallow reef is more than just a geological feature. For a whale it is a sanctuary, a nursery, and occasionally, a treacherous boundary. During the annual migration from the freezing Antarctic to the tropical North, Whales, particularly Humpbacks and Southern Rights seek out these shallow limestone and coral structures for very specific, life-sustaining reasons. To make this painting I used salvaged sawdust for texture and found some bronze paint. If you look at the reef under the water, you see the reef shimmering in the suns rays which is what I wanted to achieve. The turquiouse and soft aqua greens blend together and glow as the sun reflects off the sandy bottom. I also add a pod of whales frolicking around enjoying life.
