Before it even reaches the sand, you feel its intent. Out past the break, the ocean begins to hump its back, drawing a deep, massive breath that sucks the water away from the shore, exposing the shivering reef. This is the surf "loading"—a silent gathering of kinetic energy where the water stops being a liquid and starts behaving like a solid muscle. This is an abstract painting of a wave because I painted it from my mind remembering the fear that I feel when I get caught in a wave off the coast in Manly, Northern Beaches.
