To an artist, a poppy is a beautiful paradox. It is a masterclass in optical fragility, a flower that seems to be made of light and colored air rather than organic matter. Unlike a rose, which has a predictable, sculptural density, the poppy is a fleeting, nervous subject that challenges even the most skilled hand. Personally, I also love poppies mostly because they are wild and show up where they want to.
