THE QUEEN OF DOWNHALL GREEN – PORTRAIT

In the geography of a young girl’s life, Nanna is not just a person; she is a sovereign territory in which the laws of the harsh world do not apply. She is the "Safehouse of the Soul," a woman who has converted her years of struggle into a soft, indestructible cushion for her granddaughter to land on. At least that is how it felt to me! Of course I am bias, but my Nan really was The Best! At 98 yo she quietly passed away whilst I was holding her hand and I missed her terribly. I desperately wanted to see that twinkle in her eye, but no-one had a single decent quality photo of her. So, I painted this and gave each of her daughters a print. I painted it using a stipple effect because it's the first portrait that I ever painted. I'm just happy that I see her looking back at me with her warm smile.
