This was painted the same day that Jane Goodall died. All I could think was "what about the Chimpanzees"? "Who will be their guardian now"? And what a tragedy for the animal kingdom and humankind, the loss of a true legend.
For 26 years, Goodall lived almost exclusively among the chimpanzees, focusing on research. However, in 1986, she attended a conference in Chicago where she saw the devastating global data on deforestation and the bushmeat trade.
She realized that if she stayed in the forest just to watch the chimpanzees, there would soon be no forest, and no chimpanzees left to study. She famously remarked that she went into the conference as a scientist and left as an activist. RIP Jane Goodall.
